Jean in the Twilight if the third of a four-novel sequence under the general title of 'An Apology for the Life of Jean Robertson' the first of which, Jean in the Morning appeared in 1969, and the second, Jean at Noon, in 1971. Janet Sandison is the pseudonym of Jane Duncan, author of the 'My Friends' sequence of novels.

Author's note: The heroine of 'An Apology for the life of Jean Robertson' is Jean herself, whose names appears in the title of this volume, although she is throughout removed from the action or 'in the twilight', beyond the lights of the stage. All the characters in the full light, however, have been in some way influenced by her in the past and are still under her subtle influence. Jean Robertson, I think, personifies my belief that no encounter, however brief and seemingly trivial, between two people is without its results for better or worse, for good or ill.
