The portrait which had drawn Jake Wickham irresistibly across the room was of an arrestingly beautiful young woman with candid clear eyes and arrogant chin, dressed in the style of the mid-nineteenth century. According to his host her name was Lavinia Cushing and she had had a dramatic, tragic life terminating in death at the hands of her enraged husband.

As a writer Jake was intrigued by the story, as a man by Lavinia's beauty, and he could not put the portrait from his mind. Was it true, as his host had suggested, that certain families were dogged by ill luck even through several generations?

Back in London Jake found his work suffering and, determined to rid himself of what threatened to become an obsession, he decide to trace the story to the present day. His search took him from Morecambe Bay to the Isle of Man, and it was here that he finally found the answer; found the living image of the dead Lavinia, and found love.
