In the West Country village of Stonebury, a sixteen-year-old girl is found dead at the ancient Stone Circle, her body stabbed forty-three times. One year later Richard Kingsley, wheelchair-bound novelist of sleaze and titillation, faces trial at the Old Bailey for her murder.

Since Kingsley has already confessed, everyone believes him to be guilty, including his defence counsel, Tom Fawley. Yet at court Kingsley, while admitting a string of sexual offences perpetrated against young girls, retracts his confession. The sensational trial begins.

At first, a guilty verdict seems inevitable. But when one star prosecution witness refuses to testify and the other disappears, the outcome starts to look very different. Initially sceptical, Tom Fawley is unwillingly drawn deeper and deeper into the case, until at last he is lured to Stonebury, the village that holds the key to the shocking truth.
