Nobody gets away with attempted murder, or do they? In the eyes of the police, Bob Saunders's riverside accident was unlikely and reflected badly on his was, Pauline, stagnating in suburbia with her status-seeking husband. Despite the efforts of their neighbours, suspicion lingers on. Don, partner with Bob in many shady property deals, and his unfaithful wife Margaret, torn between her alcoholic husband and her lover, are drawn into the drama when Bob and Don arrange a deal over Mill End Farm whereby Bob will buy the farm cheaply and evict the tenant. But their scheme backfires. Don, more drunk than sober, loses his job only to find that Bob no longer has use for him. Bob is blackmailed by John Daly, a farm bailiff who knows the background to his accident, and is prepared to do anything to get a farm of his own. Only Bob survives the confrontation between the three men. But for how long? A ruthless speculator has many enemies.
