Penned by a man who described himself as "not a man of learning", he nevertheless went on to record his journeys in a fastidious, honest style tinged with the absolute wonder of a God-fearing 19th century Indian Muslim.

This is not to say that the book is plodding and pedestrian, far from it. The English is good; the narrative is refreshingly naïve, evocatively descriptive and fascinatingly detailed. We are transported to the world as it was in the late 19th century in a fashion that would have done seasoned travel narrators such as Richard Burton and Jean-Louis Burckhardt proud.

The book is wholly unique because, as opposed to most travel writers of the era who were men of the West exploring the East, Hajee Sullaiman Shah Mahomed was a man of the East exploring the West.
